Spring Break 2019 - Days Eight & Nine: Donner Pass, Folsom Reservoir, and Sutter's Mill

We met Steve for a yummy lunch in Truckee and stopped by the Donner Pass Museum before heading out of the Tahoe Basin and down into the Valley. The views from Donner Pass were amazing. The kids appreciated the significance of the history there as they'd read books on the subject and the museum was interesting.

We had a really lovely camp spot on the eastern shore of Folsom Reservoir. Hardly anyone else was there which was peaceful but a little unnerving.
The ranger also told us to watch out for rattle snakes (apparently there are little baby ones all over the place this time of year). He then came back with this one to show us from a safe distance away. We could hear its rattle and were glad it was in a bucket and not in our campsite.

At 85 degrees in the valley, it was great swimming weather for the kids.

Edison enjoyed some quiet time by himself in the tent - a rarity on a family vacation.
The sunset was gorgeous. The ranger came back with glow sticks for the kids and they had a lot of fun running around with them at twilight.

The next morning the kids played Jedi games while Eben and I packed up the rig.
We went down to the South Fork of the American River and scouted it out. It was running really high and we didn't feel comfortable running it this time with the kids.

This rapid is called Troublemaker...
We ended up spending the afternoon in Coloma, a historical town on the South Fork of the American River. Little did we know that this was the site where gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill that sparked the 1849 California Gold Rush. It was neat to explore all the old buildings and especially the working blacksmith shop.

After an easy flight back from Sacramento and a ride home from Nana that got us home at 9:00, the kids still managed to have energy to find the Easter baskets that were waiting for them at home. Somehow the Easter Bunny always manages to remember the Phillips children even when we are on the road.
