Glacier National Park - Day Three: Two Medicine, Highway 2, Lake McDonald

Rain, rain, and more rain. There was no point trying to get outdoors so we stayed in our room until check out time at 11:00. Lots of reading and Magic games and we all got a hot shower. Today our Plan B ended up being to explore the Two Medicine area of Glacier (SE corner) that originally was not even on our agenda. But it allowed us to spend a lot of time exploring via car. Then we would return to the West Glacier side via Highway 2 and see some new scenery on that drive.

We had to leave and re-enter the park in the Two Medicine area - finally got some of the requisite pictures at the park entry sign.

By the time we got to Running Eagle Falls at Two Medicine, the rain had mostly stopped and we were able to hike a little. The bark on this black cottonwood tree is deeply grooved and interesting.

Running Eagle Falls was at one time called Trick Falls because the top half of the falls goes through a chute behind the rock. We'd never seen anything like it and it was neat we could hike to it and see it.

After the falls we went to the end of the road which was a campground, ranger station, camp store area on Upper Two Medicine Lake. I'm sure it would feel quite different on a clear, sunny day. Today it was misty and mysterious. The biggest surprise of the day was the amazing roasted red pepper soup from the camp store. WOW! Best soup ever. The kids tried it and loved it too, we had to buy more. Yum!

We stopped at Glacier Hotel on our way back to West Glacier. Again - so interesting to explore the old hotels. This one was built by the Great Northern Railroad Company to attract and serve tourists.

Our final stop for the day was the Lake McDonal Motor Inn. We had a corner room with a peek-a-boo view of the lake and a little courtyard area outside our front door. It was perfect for cooking our dinner and getting a little shelter from the rain that started again that evening.

We explored the Lake McDonald Lodge and beach area, lots of walking and bike riding, and had more Magic Games.
