Canadian Adventure Day Three: Broughtons, South to Cortes Island

We bid a fond farewell to the green float house on day three as we made our way back to Vancouver Island and then southward 100 miles to Cortes Island in the Desolation Sound area.

The kids had fallen in love with Sam-Sam, the dock dog and gave him lots of love before saying goodbye.

Heading south out of the Broughtons. We went past humpbacks feeding along the shore. It was magical. They make a circle about 16-20 feet in diameter under the water. You can see their bubble trail on the water's surface. Then all of a sudden, they leap out of the water and catch a bunch of fish in their mouths before splashing back in again and repeating the cycle.

We also went through a pod of playful orcas as we were about to cross Johnstone Strait.

We took the boat back out of the water at Telegraph Cove and then drove about 100 miles south to Campbell River where we re-launched the boat. We stashed all the camping gear and coolers into the Durango and I drove that across two ferries to reach Cortes Island while everyone else just hopped in the Whaler.  This was my view from Heriot Bay on the north end of Quadra Island while I was waiting for ferry #2. The layers and layers of islands and mountains is magnificent.
We set up camp on this field at Gorge Harbour Marina and Camping Resort. It was the perfect spot!
Down at the water they have a big deck over with stone fireplace and live music most nights overlooking the harbor.
