Alaska Adventure: Alyeska Ski Resort, Whittier, Homer

We finished up at Denali, then drove to the town of Girdwood to check out Alyeska Ski Area. Then we explored the Kenai Peninsula. We started at the Begich-Boggs visitor center which was definitely worth a look. Then through the Whittier Tunnel. Apparently the tunnel to Whittier (2.5 miles) is a one-way and is also shared with trains. It was like waiting for the ferry. We are really digging the truck for its multipurpose uses. Tailgate lunch! Yummm. Whittier was lovely and quaint and there was a cool waterfall that we didn't hike to because of the rain. On the way out of that area we stopped at a stream and got to see sockeye salmon running. There were a lot of them and it was pretty impressive.

We were supposed to camp in Hope that night, but with it pouring rain, it just didn't seem like a great way to spend our vacation. So instead, we called an audible and drove all the way out to Homer with a stop at Cooper Landing on the Kenai River in between.

Our hotel in Homer ended up being spacious and had a lovely view of the water and great beach access. It felt so good to stretch our legs after the drive. The kids made up a bunch of beach games and had a nice time of it. After dinner we explored the Homer Spit area and cruised the marina to check out boats.

Our trip morphed into more of a road trip given some lousy (rainy) weather. But we are making the best of it and seeing all that we can. Alaska never fails to impress and we have only met the nicest people in our travels.
