Alaska Adventure: Seward and Resurrection Bay and Aialik Glacier

We started that morning in Homer with a little bit of blue sky peeking through. Then we drove to Exit Glacier in the Kenai Fjords National Park and had a nice, short hike to an overview. The kids and I all wished we’d picked the eight mile hike in order to get on the actual Harding Ice Field…. Next time.
Then we drove down to Lowell Point to play on the beach - it was just about high tide, so couldn’t hike out. Trying to avoid the rain, our last adventure of the day was to the Sea Life Center - touch tanks, seals, king crab, and a BIG sea lion. So cool.

Following that, we had an awesome day on the water in Resurrection Bay and Aialik Bay with Captain Ryan in a Northern Latitudes trip. We saw sea lions, harbor seals, jellies, puffins (my new favorites), salmon, waterfalls, icebergs ….. and glaciers!!! This was definitely the high point of the trip for us.

We lucked out with a break in the weather heading out. 6 foot seas on return. Ooof.
But this area is stunning. The sound of calving glaciers is like thunder. Aialik Glacier comes down from the Harding Glacier and is 1 mile across- dwarfs the helicopter and plane that went by. The icebergs were delicate and exquisite. The color of the water was brilliant.
