AUGUST: Sunriver Vacation: Day 1 - Lava Lands, Lava Butte, Lava Cave Tube and the Pool!

Our big family vacation this year is to Sunriver, near Bend in Central Oregon. We have a rad airbnb home and everyone has lots of room to spread out and chill. We brought all our toys to float, paddle, hike, bike, and explore. Our plan is to have adventures every day and relax each evening. We have been excited to discover the miles and miles of awesome bike paths here and the kids love the giant recreation center with a bunch of pools, waterslides and even a lazy river.

Our first full day was to go to the Lava Lands area of the Newberry Crater National Volcanic Monument. We hiked through old molten lava flows, hiked through the “lava cast forest” which held molds of tree trunks that had been created when lava flowed through the area but cooled faster around the trees. We got to hike the one-mile long lava cave tube. We found this tube even more interesting to explore and larger than the one we’d been in earlier this year in Hawaii. It was a very interesting experience. We also went up to the to top of Lava Butte and got to look out over the landscape of many buttes, craters, and lava flows. After all that excitement, we spent the rest of the afternoon at the pool. We finished the evening with Edison doing a sweet BBQ on the back deck. Vacation life is good!
