On Wednesday, I didn’t plan any big adventures and let the kids decide how we were going to spend the day. Their plan was to 1. sleep in, 2. have a lazy morning, 3. ride bikes and explore, and 4. head to the pools. It was a pretty great plan all around and we totally nailed it. We could probably spend another week riding the bike trails around Sunriver and I’d like to come back and continue to explore. We also walked to the Nature Center, saw a bunch of tiny toads and a giant Eurasian Owl. The kids took turns seeing how far they could jump and comparing themselves to different animal jump lengths. We were treated to a beautiful sunset made more brilliant by smoky conditions in the area.
Thursday we left the condo and drove north to Maupin to do the commercial “day run” section of the Deschutes. It was a portion we had to forgo last year on our multi-day trip due to strong headwinds and bad weather. We returned today in 85 degree weather and a lightweight raft set up for paddling. It was perfect conditions. The kids loved all the big hits from the rapids and wave trains. They especially liked being able to float through wave trains out of the boat and there were a number of places where this was possible. We had great runs through all the rapids and it was fun to have a challenge and take on bigger water. We eddied out at Elevator and the kids swam it a bunch of times and also were able to dive off the ledge at that spot, too and just swim around and play. It was quite a drive home, but we stopped for a delicious Thai dinner in Yakima on the way home and kept listening to our second audiobook of the trip. We made it home by 9:30 and it felt really nice to be back!
