It is a rare and special thing to have friends you can travel with - it requires a matching of styles and personalities to a deep level so that no one is driven crazy in the close quarters and stress that can come with travel and having to update and pivot on plans (repeatedly in this case). How lucky we are to have had such a fabulous week together! We laughed, we cried, we danced, we hiked a lot and we ate good food!
Day 1: We loaded the U-Haul Friday night and headed out of town Saturday morning. We stopped at Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood for lunch which was beautiful and as impressive as always. Of course we had to get The Shining axe and take a few pictures before we left. Then it was on to Bend. Luckily most of the smoke that had been there the week before had cleared out and we had blue skies and a lovely Airbnb. We went to see the Tedeschi Trucks show at the Hayden Homes Amphitheater in downtown Bend. We didn’t realize the opener was Lukas Wilson, Willie Nelson’s son. He has made a name for himself in his own right. My favorite song of his is “I Hope You Find Yourself.” So it was super fun to hear his set. The Tedeschi Trucks band had 10 musicians backing their two guitars and they put on a fantastic show. It looked like they were having a great time and they did some incredible jams and solos. We capped off the night with a hot tub in the backyard.
Day 2: We hiked a route around the stunning Smith Rock formation. It was cool to see climbers on Monkey Face and just nice to get out, stretch the legs, and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Later that afternoon, we cruised through the divine shops in downtown. Then we took our tubes down the river through town. This was our first time doing this and it was a blast. That night we made our pilgrimage to the Deschutes Brewery. Yum.
