Hawaii - Day 5: Mauna Kea, Caves, Waterfalls, and Temples

After the rest day, we had another adventure day. We started by going from sea level to 9200' and the Mauna Kea visitor center. From there we did a short hike up sunset hill and got some amazing views.

We came down the Hilo side and stopped at the Kaumana Caves and got to explore a lava tube that had an opening that made both sides accessible. Because this is the wet side, the tube was dripping with minerals and forming stalactites and being interrupted by roots, etc. It was much more interesting to explore than the Thurston Tube because it was so irregular (and unlit). We went pretty deep into it using our phone flashlights and the kids thought it was really awesome.

Next we stopped at both Rainbow Falls in Hilo (kind of a drive up) and then Wai'ale Falls (a short hike through dense weeds). The kids all swam at Wai'ale Falls, Edison swimming right up to the base of it. Charlotte and Reed did cliff jumping, but the rope swing never really worked well. It was very scenic and so cool to be in a place where swimming in waterfall pools is possible.

We then drove the along the north coast and across the island to Kawihae for shave ice. We ate that at the harbor and then drove a few miles south to Puukohola Heiau, a national historic site that features ruins from king Kamehaha's temples that were built as an offering to the gods for support in unifying the islands under his rule. They were very impressive. To end the night, we hung out on the lawn, played football, watched the UW Bowl game (UW wins!), and the sunset.
