Sucia Island Vacation!

We took our Whaler over to Sucia Island for a three day weekend a couple of weeks ago. We camped at a place called the China Caves on the east side of the island. You can see the caves on the left side of this picture, above our tent. Little did we realize when we set up on Friday night that it would be a big tourist draw and there'd be a bunch of people coming through over the next couple days.
Here's an aerial view of Sucia. It is a marine state park in the San Juan Islands - just north of Orcas Island. Shallow Bay is the bay at the bottom of this picture. Fossil Bay, the most popular destination, is on the far right. There are trails and even gravel roads connecting the various bays. We brought the jogging stroller - if you can believe it - and explored the whole island on Saturday morning.
Edison loved all the freedom he gets when we're camping.
We loved playing on the sandy beach and in the warm water.
Charlotte couldn't get enough of playing in the water.
We're almost twins....
Matt & Lisa brought their boat over on Saturday and we had a great weekend together. Lisa built this roaring fire while the boys went fishing after dinner.
On Sunday morning we used Matt & Lisa's boat to check out the other islands in the area, especially Patos - another marine state park, though much smaller. Edison & Charlotte both used the opportunity to take long naps.
Later that day, Eben helped some kids and their dad make a log raft.
Guess what - the engineer was successful! Edison was even able to paddle it by himself. By the end of the weekend, Charlotte was comfortable enough to play next to the water by herself.
Our trip back on Monday was dicey. Eben & I both have started to think that maybe we need a bigger boat.... But we'll see...
