We were able to set up a tour with a private guide and it was exceptional. We learned so much. (If you are going to DC, let me send you the guide's info.)
The Pentagon Memorial for the September 11th Attacks is incredibly full of symbolism. It brought it all back to the time I was living just a mile away from there at the time and woke up to the Twin Towers attacks only to be watching the news and have our house in Alexandria shake tremendously when the plane slammed into the Pentagon. The memorial is incredibly well done and worth the trip across the Potomac to see.
The Marine Corps Memorial at Arlington Cemetery is enormous and weighty - showcasing a sculpture based on the famous picture of the Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima.
There were a TON of people on tours at the Lincoln Memorial and nearby Korean War Memorial and the Vietnam Wall. But despite the crush of visitors, it was still worth it and we had some really incredible views of the monuments.
We wrapped up with a stop at the Jefferson Monument which was really beautiful at night and the view across the Tidal Basin to the Washington Monument was inspired.
