Advocating for our Students and Colleagues

We are experiencing a huge budget shortfall in Shoreline Schools (14 million) and the cuts that are on the table are heartbreaking. One that was suggested was to cut all student extracurricular activities. Well - there's no way that I was okay with that for my own children or the students at Shorecrest and in our district. So I worked with other colleagues, families, and students and we brought our case to the School Board. It ended up being a seven-hour meeting with four hours of public comment. By the end of the evening, the School Board conceded that they were taking those cuts off the table.

It felt incredible to see public advocacy achieve those results and to hear all the testimony from students about the importance of extracurriculars to their health and well-being. And, it was bittersweet because there are so many other cuts ahead for our students and my colleagues. Ugh. I wish the state would correct its flawed funding formula.
