Rachelle and I woke up before daylight on New Year’s morning feeling awesome. We packed up and headed up to the mountain first thing and made it onto about chair #5. We found really good snow and event a couple inches of fresh powder off their highest chair - White Peak Express. Fernie is known for its bowl skiing - it has five bowls - we skied mostly in Timber Bowl. we never waited in line ever. With five more feet of powder, the skiing would be epic. As it was - we enjoyed what was on offer today and then headed out to our next Powder Highway stop - Kimberley.
We are staying at the absolute cutest, most stylish boutique hotel I’ve ever been at. Kimberley is a mining town-turned tourist destination and has a tiny, walkable downtown. Unfortunately most of its really cool looking shops were closed on New Year’s Day. After an intense wood-fired sauna, we checked out the ski area, ate a delicious dinner at Stonefire and played a riotous game of Cards Against Humanity to round out the day. Definitely engaging the vacation mode.
