Maui - Day 1: Hana. Jess and I made it to Maui yesterday! We are doing our best impression of Thelma and Louise on the Road to Hana in a cherry red sports car. The air is soft and fragrant from all the flowers. Our big adventure today was heading towards Hana on the east side of the island - the side that is rainforest and bursts of rain showers, and plants and trees growing everywhere and... waterfalls! The road is very narrow and windy, with more than 50 one-lane bridges requiring yielding to the drivers from the other side. There is a waterfall at almost every pull out and many with pools suitable for jumping in. We also got down to the coast a few times and saw all manner of beaches from lava rock reefs with crashing surf to quiet black sand coves. We also stopped at a spot looking down over a peninsula of land used for Taro farming with everything neatly laid out in square fields below. There was another spot where we could pull over and look up into the Wailua Canyon with many waterfalls hanging off cliffs in the distance.
We stayed at a darling Airbnb in Hana with plenty of room, a lanai overlooking rich gardens, and many thoughtful touches. We had a delicious dinner at the only restaurant open at night: Hana Ranch. We sat on a covered patio overlooking the Pacific Ocean while rain showers came and went. But it was always a wonderful temperature.
