In the early morning, we drove along the coast, past fancy Wailea resorts, through an old lava field, and to the end of the road - and the start of the Hoapili Trail (King's Highway). Then we headed back up to Kihei and had a morning walk along the beaches before doing some necessary errands. After a nice lunch on the lanai, we got ready to go snorkeling!
We boarded a catamaran in Ma'alaea Harbor. Unfortunately the winds made going to Molokini Crater off limits, so we went to Coral Gardens, under the Pali Cliffs, instead. We had a pleasant boat ride there and the snorkeling was enjoyable. We saw lots of fish, the temperature was just right, and we had good equipment. It was a rewarding experience even if we didn't see any turtles!
After dinner, we headed to the Wailea Oceanfront Trail to catch sunset, get some exercise, and see the posh resorts firsthand. It is a beautiful stretch of coastline and the sunset didn't disappoint. We caught an entertaining fire dancer show at the Four Seasons on the walk. But the ultimate was heading to the Humuhumunukanukapua'a tiki-style restaurant at the Grand Wailea resort for a mocktail at the bar. The restaurant is surrounded by ponds lit up at night. It had a great live musician and the bar was also a fish tank for interesting tropical aquarium fish. Plus the drinks were delicious and the sunset view continued until the stars came out. What a cool night!
