Christmas Day

Santa filled our stockings with fun treats.
Including lots of art projects to keep them busy Christmas morning.
After breakfast they opened their presents from us. Edison was super excited to receive the remote control monster truck he'd been asking for.
Charlotte got cuddly with her new sleeping bag - perfect for camping trips coming up this year.
But she loved her new big girl bike and seemed to pick up how the pedals work pretty quickly.
And Edison is now able to do lots of imaginary play with his new work bench. He has asked when daddy is going to do another house project so he can help.... hopefully not for awhile!
We had my family over for Christmas dinner. We made a dinner in honor of Bestamor: pot roast, mashed potatoes, roasted asparagus, jello fruit salad and herring. Delicious!
The kids got into a frenzy of unwrapping gifts. Rest assured, each one is getting plenty of attention in the playroom these days. Thanks to Nana, Auntie Kirstie, Uncle Peter, Auntie Kathie, and Uncle Floyd for their generosity!
The kids got great books this year. Legos, dump trucks, new clothes, a V-Reader cartridge, and lots of other goodies rounded out their gifts. They were definitely spoiled this year. But heck - Christmas doesn't come that often and these are great kids!

Christmas Eve

The kids helped me make a pot roast and fruit jello in honor of Bestamor.
They were super excited that it was Christmas Eve!
Marlene and Bob came over to give Charlotte and Edison their presents.
Edison named his cat "Winnie" and now brings it to bed every night. Charlotte named her cow "Seagull." You might notice Edison has a black eye. He acquired it on Friday tugging a bag out of his locker at school. The bag was stuck, Edison tugged really hard until it suddenly came free which made Edison reel back and knock his face into a stool behind him. Ouch!
Grand Dada spent Christmas Eve with us. He found the kids the most wonderful books - Edison's new space book is a big hit.
And Charlotte got a cool Hello Kitty remote control car from Grand Dada. When I was talking to Edison before he went to bed, I asked him what his favorite present was. He said, "The Hello Kitty Car."
But it is undeniable that the railroad track expansion set (lots of fun pieces like Ys, track switchers, etc.) is totally fun.
We had a lovely dinner. I made grilled artichokes because I can remember eating those with my dad on special occasions growing up.
So much fun chasing this car.
We also opened presents from Perry and Matt. Those included an enchanting book from Wales and this giant present that the kids loved opening....
a really neat polar bear pillow!
We put out cookies for Santa and the reindeer and hung up our stockings. Edison told us at every turn all the things we had to do the right way for Santa's visit. Knowing that Santa wouldn't come until he was asleep, at 6:00 Edison announced he was ready for bed and didn't even need to watch his usual bedtime cartoon or hear his bedtime story. It was so much fun to share this Christmas with our kids and family!

DECEMBER - May Your Days Be Merry

As crazy as November was for us, December got even busier. We were still wrapping up the kitchen renovations, started skiing every Saturday at Steven's Pass (so much snow this year!), and I had quite a few evening activities to supervise at Shorecrest. Not to mention, getting the Christmas cards done. But we made it!
Charlotte's favorite stuffed animal is her penguin and Edison's favorite is his little penguin, whom he calls "Pengui."
We were proud as punch of Edison at his first school concert. He was nervous and didn't really want to do it, but he LOVES singing and the students were well prepared. In the end, he went on stage and had a blast.
He is one of the tallest kids in his class and is in the back row. Standing next to him is one of his incredibly caring teachers, Ms. Kate. I feel bad for the girl in the tie-die dress. She cried the whole time. Edison's best friend in school (at the moment) is Ben - in the first row with the tie: wouldn't you know it, he'd be best friends with the littlest boy in class. They sang four songs: Jingle Bells, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, O' Christmas Tree, and Edison's favorite: Rocking Around the Christmas Tree.
This week my grandmother, Adeline passed away. She was 98 and radiant until the end. It seems like I'm not allowed to feel badly about this because she was so old and had lived an excellent life, but I do feel sad and miss her greatly. She definitely was a constant in my life and it is hard to imagine family gatherings without her. I am exceptionally grateful that we had the years together that we did and that she got to know her great-grandchildren. We have had a lot of time to share memories together with family this past week. I had the honor of partnering with Jason to read the eulogy at her funeral service.
On Friday Edison was tugging on his bag, trying to get it pulled out of his locker. When it came lose suddenly, he flew backward and bonked the top of his nose on a stool. So he has a black eye and a swollen nose. Not exactly the look I was hoping for in our Christmas pictures this years. But, at least he'll be okay.
James and Robin came up tonight to watch the Seahawks game - the one in which we destroyed the 49ers! Charlotte and Skylar had a lot of fun playing together.
And the kids enjoyed tasty chocolate ice cream while watching Busytown Together.
And we finally finished our kitchen project! Yay!!! Before.... we had a pantry and a skinny window. Laminate counter tops and old tile.
After: no more pantry, added a peninsula with seating for four, quartz counters, marble and glass tiles, and new cabinets that blend perfectly with the original cabinets. We also added a couple new windows that can't be seen very well in this picture.

It took a few weeks to settle on the tile, but I love it! The base is a honed marble subway tile. The accent rows are crushed glass tiles that really sparkle in the light.

NOVEMBER - Birthdays and Thanksgiving!

I know I have not posted anything in a month. But I have reasons! We lost our camera last month and the old one does not take good pictures. Also, we started remodeling the kitchen, so every spare minute has been spent knocking down walls, adding a window, rebuilding walls, building the peninsula, installing cabinets, staining the wood, applying polyurethane, painting, etc. Our new counters are supposed to be installed Thursday and then we have tiling the backsplash left and we will be done! Pictures to follow!
We did find time to celebrate Eben's birthday, Nana's birthday, and Bestemor's birthday. We commemorated the occasion with a large family portrait, our first since my wedding and the addition of Edison and Charlotte.
Edison got some new goggles that he loves. We tested them out in the bath.
We played in the cradle.
And made Thanksgiving crowns.
We had Thanksgiving at Kirstie's house. Charlotte Adeline had some good cuddle time with Great-Grandmother Adeline.
While Edison stuck with Dad at Thanksgiving.

And Edison built his coolest railroad track ever, under the tutelage of his Grand Dada Herbert.

Halloween

We had a great Halloween - spent Sunday carving the pumpkins.
The kids looked online to find the faces they wanted to give the pumpkins.
Edison opted for a scary pumpkin (which was kind of surprising, actually), while Charlotte picked a goofy pumpkin. Edison went on a field trip on Friday to a pumpkin farm and brought home the little one - he picked a ghost for that one.
 They are magical at night.
On Halloween we did an afternoon trick-or-treating session at the Mill Creek Town Center.

Did I mention it was pouring rain?
But they still had a blast.

That night my dad came over for dinner and he and Eben took the kids trick-or-treating in our neighborhood while answered the door for our visitors. Kids in bed by 8:30, they brought home a ton of candy, most of which Eben and I will eat - not bad!

Eben's Birthday

Nana comes on Tuesday nights and stays over. On Wednesdays we have a "late morning" and the kids help her make crepes - we look forward to those mornings all week.
We celebrated Eben's birthday dinner at Kafe Neo in Mill Creek Town Center. The food was yummy: gyros, falafel and hummus, and the kids did a good job during the meal.
At four-and-a-half, Edison is very much into role play - here he and Charlotte are playing night-night.
For Eben's real birthday, we stayed at the Tulalip Casino Resort, just a few miles up the road. We had actually won the stay at the Shorecrest Booster Auction last March. We had a fabulous time.
Matt and Lisa got a room at the casino, too. It was lovely.
We found out after we made reservations that it was also the night of their big Halloween bash. So we planned our costumes. Lisa & I went as replacement referees while Matt and Eben dressed as the DirecTV football fairies.

We had a great time dancing and gambling.
On Sunday morning, we enjoyed a relaxing visit to the pool before heading back home to the real world.
