Olympic National Park Coast Backpack - Days Two and Three: Hole in the Wall and Chilean Point

This involved a big day hike north - so nice to not have the weight of the big packs. We timed it with the tides to get around various points and outcroppings. We walked out to what would usually be an island, but was reachable at low tide. Amazing tide pools. Beach smell. Kelp piles. Seaweed carpets. We realized that the beach by our campsite was the best around. There we enjoyed the afternoon, though it started clouding over. It started raining around 5 and we were driven into the tent. Luckily it lightened up enough for dinner. But still sprinkled most of the night. We did watch the sunset which was pretty subdued in this weather. And we wrapped up the night listening to the Twilight audiobook in the tent.

Packed out the morning of Day 3 and headed home. Made sure to take a cheesy picture with the Twilight sign. And I made the kids stop at Port Gamble with me on the way back since its architecture always makes me feel like we took a trip back in time. They were cool with it since I bribed them with ice cream. This definitely felt like a getaway. It’s hard to believe we will all become too busy for things like this once school resumes in a couple weeks. Gotta squeeze every last bit of summer and family time! Cherish it!

Backpacking the Olympic Coast - Rialto Beach - Hole in the Wall - Chilean Memorial. Day One.

This was the second half of our Olympics getaway.

We had perfect beach weather on day one and we managed to find an incredible campsite. The kind where people have made rooms for tents, campfire, and a kitchen with driftwood counters, etc. The boys played in the surf all afternoon while I happily read my book. Charlotte and I walked over to Hole-In-The-Wall after dinner and we saw cool tide pools and marveled at how the islands and rock faces brightened up in the Golden Hour. Finally, we made hot cocoas and enjoyed a stunner of a sunset that included an encore of the moon setting, and fell asleep to the crashing waves.
