Semester Report Card Celebration! Olive Garden, a Movie, and the Future of Flight Museum

All three kids had exceptional report cards at semester! Edison and Charlotte both had straight A's and Reed was doing awesome at so many skills in 2nd Grade, especially excelling at math. They got to choose a celebration dinner and we made our way to Olive Garden (mostly for the breadsticks, I think). Afterwards we saw a movie in the movie theater, a real treat!

On Sunday we were looking for something fun to do and found ourselves at Boeing's Future of Flight Museum. It has a cool view of the warehouses and airplanes under construction from a rooftop deck. Inside it looked pretty sparse at first glance, however they had a lot of interactive exhibits and the kids were very engaged for hours.

Bernoulli's Principle - Hand's On Version

Flying drones...

Learning about the shape of flight..

Simulating being an astronaut...

But hand's down, this was the kids' favorite. They get to design an aircraft and then fly it through a race course. They were getting really good at it. Edison and Reed both made it to the top of the leader board (more than once)!

And finally, the Ozobot robots. The kids have done these in school. Basically the robot will follow the line that is drawn and you can add commands into the line with colored dashes. The volunteer hosting the exhibit was really impressed with the kids' creations and kept praising their creativity. It was really fun to watch!

Mid-February: Sports, Music, Baking, and Art

Here's how we fill our days: swimming, lacrosse (just started for the spring season), baking (something special for Valentine's Day, music (first orchestra concert in two years!), art, and time with Nana. We have a pretty great routine going on here!

Vegas Getaway! Part 3: Adventure Dome

One last morning swim before checking out of the resort. We had been hoping to score some low price Pro Bowl tickets at the last minute, but that was not to be. So we had a pretty great alternate of going to the Adventure Dome instead. I was trying to harness all my inner coolness and hopped onto both roller coaster rides right off the bat. Oh wow - it was rough. I was hoping for a smooth and breezy ride. Nope - they were both really aggressive with upside down parts, barrel rolls, and straight down drops. I was glad I'd shared that with Charlotte and Reed, but definitely enjoyed mini-golf mode with Edison later!
Charlotte and Reed in particular had a blast and ran from ride to ride with giddy excitement. Watching them have so much fun was the best part of the day for me. Our trip home was smooth and uneventful and we were ready for our school week by the time we went to bed at nine. What a great trip!

Vegas Getaway! Part 2: Red Rock Canyon

The kids and I took a 30 minute drive out to Red Rock Canyon on Saturday morning. I had never heard of that area before and it was absolutely incredible. There are several mountain ranges in a ring around a valley that is connected by a scenic drive and protected as a nature conservancy. There was a great visitor center and well maintained trails.

Calico Rocks

The layering of different rocks and mountain ranges was stunning. Note Turtlehead Peak in the back ground.

We chose Calico Tanks as our first hike. It brought us up and through the Calico Rocks to a spot that overlooked the Las Vegas valley. It was a joy to experience. It was neat to get up close to cacti (though Reed took a couple prickers from one.) The frozen ponds were also fun and surprising.

We stopped at the petroglyph wall and tried to interpret some of the markings without much success.

Our final hike, Willow Springs Loop, took us to an unexpected frozen waterfall and stream. It was marvelous and the kids loved touching everything and sliding on the ice.

We earned a relaxing afternoon at the pool and hot tub after all our hiking! Followed by a Winter Olympics marathon.
