Olympic Peninsula Getaway - Days 3-5: Ozette Triangle, Sol Duc Hot Springs, Devil's Punchbowl

5 Days/50 miles on trails/ 3 books / & quite a few blisters. I took a deep dive into the Olympic Peninsula as my first solo adventure this summer. After Hurricane Ridge and Shi Shi Beach, I backpacked to Sand Point on the Ozette Triangle for a foggy overnight. No sunset due to fog, but the next morning, I crossed paths with a black bear on my way to Cape Alava! It was magical. I was nervous because I know how fast bears can run. But he was very interested in foraging the tide pools, so when he was engaged in that, I walked past him, trying to make myself look really big. It worked and I felt a glow from that encounter the rest of the day. I drove to Sol Doc and soaked my achy legs at the hot springs resort and enjoyed a non-freeze dried dinner at the Lodge. Tuesday I hiked to Devil’s Punchbowl on the NE side of Lake Crescent and marveled that I had it to myself. The color is just captivating. I explored the wonderful Spruce Trail on the lake shore beyond that point and by the time I came back past Devil's Punchbowl, there were dozens of people splashing around and having a marvelous time. I can’t believe my good fortune to have stillness and reflection there when I did. After that it was back across the ferry a little earlier than planned because I missed my kids and wanted to catch their swim meet.
